Sound-responsive genes in plants

2007

Scientists in South Korea were able to isolate several sound-induced genes according to their paper - Plant gene reponses to frequency-specific sound signals.

To find out if sound would alter gene expressions, transgenic plants were exposed to several different types of sound treatments which included classical music and single frequency.

After four hours of listening to classical music and single frequency under dark and light conditions for ten days, the gene expressions were examined.  Responses to single frequency effects on two genes that also react to light were noted.  The higher the frequency the more active the gene responses were.

Classical music played to the plants included: Piano Sonata No.14 in C# Minor (Beethoven)Op.27 No.2 “Moonlight” 1st Movement (Beethoven), Clair du Lune from Suite Bergamasque  (Debussy) and Hungarian Dance No. 5 (Brahms).
