Japanese demand for the Atlantic bluefin tuna is bringing it to brink of extinction. For over 3000 years the fish has been caught in the Mediterranean but recent changes in fishing methods and an increasing fleet has caused the population to drop rapidly. The whilst the fish fetches an attractive sum of up to $15000 per fish in the Mediterranean, the red meat is sold for a whooping $75 per 100g at Tokyo restaurants after being auctioned in the Tsukiji fish market (above).
