Mark Lythgoe

Dr Mark Lythgoe is Director of the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging, which is a new multidisciplinary research centre for experimental imaging. Mark has established the first in vivo imaging centre at UCL and has been integral to developing an experimental imaging strategy across the university. The Centre provides state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging, photoacoustic imaging, confocal endoscopy, ultrasound, bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging, as well as SPECT/CT and CT/radiotherapy.

Dr Lythgoe currently leads a group of 25 researchers and PhD students in a programme of study focusing on developing new imaging methods for identifying pathophysiology and its functional consequences in experimental models of disease. Mark been awarded £19M in grants and is co-director of the UCL Doctoral Training Programme in Biomedical Imaging. He has published over 100 papers including two recent papers in Nature and another in The Lancet.

In 2005 he received a Biosciences Federation Science Communication Award, which rewards bioscientists who make an outstanding contribution to communicating science to the public. In 2007 Mark was awarded membership of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain, which is a society of eminent brain scientists that is committed to enhancing the public understanding of brain research. In 2010 he was awarded the Davies Medal for a significant contribution to imaging.
